27th KIFF Will Start From Jan 7 With The Screening Of 'Aranyer Din Ratri'

The 27th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) is about to start on January 7, 2022. It will commence with the screening of the inaugural film, a Satyajit Ray directorial 'Aranyer Din Ratri'. This was revealed at a press conference today where Minister of State, Indranil Sen, film director Arindam Sil, actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay were present.

Indranil Sen said, "KIFF has been rescheduled due to Covid pandemic like 26th KIFF. Arrangements are being made to show movies following Covid protocols. One seat will be left vacant between the two. All the 10 venues will follow this 50 per cent occupancy protocols."

Films from 42 countries will be screened this year. 103 feature films and 58 shorts and documentaries, a total of 161 films will be screened at this year's festival. Out of a total of 1698 entries, these films have been chosen. Among this 161, 46 foreign films have been selected from 41 countries.

Special homages will be paid to Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Dilip Kumar, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Claude Carriere, Swatilekha Sengupta and Sumitra Bhave at this year's festival.

Centenary tributes will be given to Satyajit Ray, Chidananda Dasgupta and Miklos Jancso. There will also be exhibitions on their lives and work. Special exhibitions will also be held on the lives and works of Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Dilip Kumar and Swatilekha Sengupta; festival authorities confirmed.

"The festival has shrunk due to Covid pandemic but the quality of the films has not compromised a bit. It's a festival of handpicked best films from the world. This year, eminent director Shoojit Sircar will deliver Satyajit Ray Memorial Lecture on January 11" said Parambrata Chattopadhyay.
